November 23rd of 2015 marked the concert performance of Mattieu Herzog's Ensemble Apassionato, the "deeply emotional ensemble," inside the halls of Paris' Salle Gaveau. The entire performance, a combination of string and vocals, was conducted by Herzog with the role of narrator being handled by René Hernandez's. Performers included Sasha Boldashev, a Russian-born harpist and the first non-Briton to win that nation's Brilliant Prodigies Award; the Toulouse-born Gérard Caussé on his signature instrument, the viola, and Yael Raanan-Vandor, winner of the Canary Islands' International Music Festival prize, serving the role of an admirable contralto. Ensemble attendees were privy to soul-stirring renditions of Dvorák, Debussy, Hersant and a fourth, concluding piece by Johannes Brahms. To gain a small sample of appreciation for this performance and some insights into Herzog's approach, give the above video a listen; ideally with your eyes closed.
